My background
Following the birth of my second child in 1998, I felt uninformed, disempowered and coerced. I had a wonderful healthy baby and a normal physiological birth, however, I felt I was not given any information about may care or able to make any informed choices. This inspired me to become a midwife so that I could support women in making choices that are right for them.

Highlight of my midwifery career!
During my time as an NHS clinical midwife, I was involved in setting up and working in a caseloading home birth team. This meant I got to know women and families during pregnancy and cared for them at home during labour. It was wonderful building relationships and knowing the wishes of families. I was able to support physiological, undisturbed birth ensuring woman and families had the knowledge to make decisions that were right for them. However, these kind of services are very rare, despite the evidence that supports this type of care.
Educating myself to support women, families and midwives
I went on to do my Masters in Research and my Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) I wanted a leadership role so I could support women, families and the midwives that cared for them. The research from my Ph.D. found that women get most of the knowledge around labour and birth from the midwives that care for them but this is blocked in some environments. I went on to be a practice development midwife for the first non-NHS provider of maternity services and I now teach Midwifery at University.
